Tips Landscape Storytelling by.ableh photography

Posted by admin On March - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Need both photographs and about a subject.

This is something that requires much consideration in landscape photography in particular. One of the best ways to ensure that your pictures both from and about a subject is to think of adjectives would you use to describe the scene in front of you.

Remember that the adjective is a powerful tool for the writers of the story. Adjectives can help photographers tell their stories, too. Think of adjectives would you use to describe the scene for a family member or friend: lush meadows, huge cliffs, colorful gardens.

Then think about how you can use the elements and light to describe their adjectives in the way of storytelling.

If you think this picture Stanage Edge, Final andy_AHG Sunlight by a lot of adjectives in this story.

lanscape

I see it as a representation of this view of peace. The fading warmth of the sun helps to describe the serenity and breadth of this cliff edge.

It’s a real treat to see the story in a landscape photograph. What kind of adjectives you see in the picture this scene?

The first start with the proper settings

Halloween night can be a bit complicated in your camera. If you’re at a point and shoot camera you are looking for “scene” settings and use “night setting”. Just remember that you will want to strengthen yourself and your camera as often as possible, as this increases the ISO setting and shutter speed to use again.

If you use a DSLR camera to adjust the night time photography by upping the ISO and use a shutter speed longer. Bring flash is very helpful. Try dragging the shutter for a better exposure, remember to keep the camera steady!

Party pics at Halloween can be great, but remember that there’s more to Halloween than trick or treat and bad costumes. It’s about atmosphere and mood. Getting creative with photography means you open your mind to see from a different perspective.

TIP 1 – Go Hollywood

techneque photography

hellowen

Some of our best memories of Halloween involves the things that bump in the night. We can thank Hollywood for that. So, if you’re friends with all vintage costumes, vintage use plugins and filters, or better yet expired real movie! This will really add to the mood.

Tip 2 – Let Nature be your Guide

techneque overviews

helloween 2

Yes, Halloween may be all about fake blood, face paint, and a wig, but do not forget that nature provides year-round terrible crawlies. And nature can be a wonderful thing to see.

Tip 3 – Eerie Camera Tricks

Great spooky background … check.

Old wedding dress … check.

Willing models …. Check.

The camera shutter speed set to high … check.

Tip 4 – Children Can Be Scary

Most of the Halloween makeup and a little selective de-saturation in Photoshop can make a big impact. Reminds me of those kids from the Corn movies. Scary.

Tip # 5 – Children Can Be Cute Too

Halloween is a great time to catch the kids in their costumes. Plus you can use it against them in the future, as their first date! Using natural light from windows, if available and try to avoid shooting down on them.

building

Measuring light in photography is an art and science. The combination of technical knowledge and artistic vision is very important to use creative exposure techniques and create a better image.

Combining art and science to measure the light used to build a basis for setting your exposure reading. You can use this reading as a sample given the exposure amount of light available for you to catch with your camera.

Once you sample light reading, or basic, you can use the component in the exposure equation to select or manipulate the exposure setting to set aperture, shutter speed, and / or ISO.

Today, one of the most commonly used tools to get your basic reading is your cameras built in light meter. You can set your ISO and then put the camera in automatic exposure for early reading. With the camera in automatic exposure shutter speed and aperture will be selected for you.

More advanced ways to use your cameras built in light meter will use the aperture priority setting or shutter speed priority setting.

You can get a basic light meter reading in the shutter priority by pre-selecting your shutter speed. The camera will adjust your diaphragm or cracks.

If you use the aperture priority mode you can choose your f-stop and the camera will adjust the shutter speed.

Using the aperture or shutter priority mode is often better than using a full automatic mode to get the exposure reading. This is because you will have control over two of the three components in the exposure equation.

Some camera models will allow you to get the light meter reading with only doing “half-press”.This is where you press the shutter button halfway down. Always check your camera manual for specific to your model.

The biggest problem is what you are directing your camera to get your reading. We are fortunate to have rarely uniform light subject. A bright subject will give a very different readings of a dark subject lit even in the same scenario. More brightly lit sky at sunset from the ground at the same time today. Watch what you are pointing the camera at the time you get a light meter reading.

Once you get your start reading you can adjust to compensate for any creative exposure you need for a given scenario. Perhaps you are a portrait of a backlit subject by the sun. You may end up with a “blow-out” the sky. Nothing. It is important to expose the many portraits is the face.

If you just rely on your camera metering and never really adjust you will only end up with “average” exposures.

This may be fine at times, but often result in a fairly boring image.

children

See them in action
The kids are always moving, because every parent with a toddler can attest. Accepted. You’ll get some pictures showing the action of the movement if you set your camera correctly. The kids on the swings, slides, merry-go-round, playing sports, etc … This is a great activity to show your kids have fun. If you want to “freeze” the action, set your camera to the fastest shutter speed is higher with ISO (be careful not to go too high, you’ll begin to get noisy images). If you still use your automatic settings, just use the sports setting. Do not be stopped by freezing the action though. If you want to make a motion on the image to add a flare that you can slow down the shutter speed. Pan the camera with the movement and you’ll find the pictures where the background is the subject moves, but most of the focus. Do not get frustrated with your first results; this does not take a little practice and experimentation.

Get the level of their
Children are smaller than adults (my wife calls me Captain Obvious sometimes), so you’ll need to come down to the level of their eyes. This will help keep your child’s body in the right proportions to avoid distortion in which the child’s strange to have a big head is not normal. This rule is not hard and fast, however. Experiment with the angle can be fun.

Spying
Now I’ll never really told you to spy on your kids (and please, just to spy on your kiddos), but taking pictures of your children when they are not aware you can produce good pictures. This is a great way to capture the personality of the child. If they are really cool while playing with their toys and then get a good close-ups of their expression. Use portrait camera settings to help escape from the background on this exercise.

Forget the smile
Portraits where children are forced to smile at, well … forced. So, forget it. Kiddos continuously learn about their environment, so they naturally thinkers. You can even create them in this way sometimes by asking them to rest their chins on their hands. If you need to get a smile and then try to play peek-a-boo behind the camera. The best for my son.

Focus on children
Making your child the center of attention. After all, the image is not about the background most of the time. This is the place that the portrait setting (usually a silhouette of the head) on your digital camera will help. The camera should be trying to blur the background so that the subject of your image stand out more (known as the shallow depth of field). You can do it manually with the shutter set to f/2.8 you if you have a lens or f/5.6 for most other digital cameras. Anything between fine too.

I choose a shutter speed by.ableh photography

tips to select the shutter speed-untu photographers and photo photography

A fast enough shutter speed is essential to avoid becoming a picture blurred through camera shake, or because the subject itself was moving during exposure.

As well as helping to control overall exposure, shutter speed has an important role in portraying movement within a picture. The first thing that can eliminate shutter speed is the movement of the camera itself. However you try to steadily hold the camera with your hands, involuntary movements from your muscles means that it is impossible to keep the image in the viewfinder completely still.

As a general rule, no set-up camera can be handheld without the risk of a blurred picture unless a shutter speed of faster than 1/30sec is used. But the problem with camera shake becomes more acute the longer the lens that you use – or the more you zoom into the subject. At higher magnifications, the slight movement of your body becomes more noticeable. The simple rule is therefore always to use the shutter speed that is the reciprocal of the focal length that you are using (or faster). For a 28mm lens setting you should use 1/30sec (the closest available speed to 1/28sec). For a 100mm you would use 1/125sec, 1/250sec for a 200mm, and 300mm lens for setting a minimum of 1/500sec.

Slower speeds can be used without the risk of camera shake, of course, if the camera is supported. A tripod should allow you the greatest range of shutter speeds – slower speeds but can be used by balancing the camera on a solid surface (such as a wall or car roof), or Tightly wedging your body into a doorway. Some digital cameras and SLR lenses have image Stabilization systems that help reduce the effects of camera shake.

The movement of the subject itself should also be considered, as a faster than usual speed will generally be needed to capture the action crisply. The exact shutter speed needed will depend not only on the speed of the subject, but its distance from the camera, the focal length of the lens, and its direction of movement. The bigger the subject is in the frame, the more marked its movement will appear. Similarly, you will need a faster shutter speed if the subject is moving across the frame than if it is moving towards the camera.

Take it slowly after dark

When the light is low, there may be no alternative to using a much slower shutter speed than you could possibly use with a handheld camera. If a tripod is not available, you can stand a camera on a flat surface, such as the window ledge, and fire the camera using its self-timer to minimise vibration.

close ups

One day I was just idly to take some pictures of the lizard that makes me think about the dangers of close-up photography in general.

The first problem we need to see is, how close the lens will focus. The lens has a minimum focus distance varies from lens to lens, zoom lens has a few more ‘macro’ setting and the focus will be quite close but most of the focus lens will not close enough to take a picture on the right.

Extension Tubes

If you use the lens will not focus close enough there are several ways to make him do it. If the lens is removed from the camera, you can use the ‘extension tube. This usually comes in a series of three which can be used separately or together. They fit between the lens and the camera body and, as the name, there is no glass in them, they only serve to move the lens away from the field of film (or CCD in digital cameras). The lens will now focus on objects that are closer than before but will no longer focus on infinity.

An extension tube is a good solution as you still use the lens quality that you pay so much money and so the image quality will be the same as for any other shot. Weaknesses (there’s always a bad side, you never get anything for nothing) is that you need more light (inverse square law works equally well on the back of the lens as in front), both a longer shutter time or space wider. Your meter will automatically compensate for this, but it can cause severe depth of field problems we will discuss in a few paragraphs.

By using some gradients and simple brushes we can create a eye catching composition that will leave you wanting more.

Step 1

First i created a new document of 500 × 300 pixels that I filled with white (you can chose to create yours on a larger or smaller canvas its up to you). Create a new layer and select the lower part of the canvas.

photoshop tutorial

fill-half-canvas-with-blacks1

Step 2

Now using brushes that i had in my collection, i painted grass and some flowers in black across the top of the black line. You can find brushes like the ones i used at deviantart.com or a similar place.

photoshop tutorial

brushed-on-grass-and-flowers-s2

Step 3

Now create a new layer and place it under the black layer (with the grass and flowers). Fill the layer with white and drag it below the gradient from top to bottom.

photoshhop tutorial

brush-gradient-s3

Gradient will look like the picture below.

brush-gradient-outcome

Step 4

Create a new layer in between the gradient background layer and the grass layer. With the polygonal lasso tool i create rough mountains as below.

Then apply a gradient below to gunung.mountain-gradient layer

Step 5

Next decorate you composition with some objects, i chose a boy jumping (i found a silhouette brush on deviantart.com)

bokeh

I will try to explain the effect of Bokeh, ..

Bokeh refers to the technique of blurring an image to add to the aesthetic quality of a photograph. The word bokeh, derived from the Japanese word “boke” (pronounced “bo-keh”), literally translates to ‘fuzziness’. When a photographer wants to make an image appear softer, bokeh will put the object slightly out of focus without completely destroying the integrity of it’s definition.

Often, bokeh is confused with the idea of a picture’s “sharpness.” Rather than describing the point of focus, however, bokeh is the blurring of the background or foreground.

When an image within a camera’s lens is “in focus,” the camera has positioned the image at the point where most of the light has converged on the image to a fine point. Yet, if an image appears out of focus, then the light appears as a blurred disc, rather than a focused point. To create bokeh in a picture is to put the image out of focus without making it unrecognizable.

When bokeh is used incorrectly, a picture will render a combination of sharply defined lines combined with blurriness.

To the contrary, correctly performed bokeh produces an image with no sharp edges. Instead, the fuzziness produced by bokeh suggests the image without distinct borders.
