Bounce Lighting, typically used in portrait photography is the lighting that bounces off a particular source (like an umbrella, a blank wall or drop down sheet) to surround the focus of light. Lighting rebound can also be created by reflecting light on a ceiling or a reflector aluminized. Overall, the pictures taken with the lighting of the current rebound central object or person in natural light. Bounce lighting is a form of ambient light, because, as the ambient light, the light illuminates the central object indirectly bounce a photo. Less light in the final picture tends to produce softer images potentially lower.

Even with minimal gear, the right combination of light, wardrobe, posing, camera settings, and post-processing can result in dramatic images that will make any woman look like a goddess bathed in soft, beautiful illumination.

1) Lighting:  If I have a big white wall or background surface to work with, I will usually point a strobe directly at it in order to blast the area behind the subject with light.

When I only have a small flash unit to work with, I’ll put it on Manual mode and set the flash to 1/8 power or higher, depending on the aperture and ISO I’m working with.  If you’re using more flash units, or higher powered strobes, you’ll have the luxury of smaller apertures and lower ISOs.

I’ll often place my flash at a distance somewhere between my subject and the background, out of frame, aimed toward the background at a 45 degree angle.  There are other effective ways to bath your subject in background illumination.

The main idea is to hit your background with plenty of overpowering light, or use light AS the background.  You don’t even need flash if you have enough constant or natural light to work with.  For example, bright natural light coming in through a window just behind your subject might do the trick with the right camera settings.

Do you need a main light or some other type of illumination for the front/visible side of your subject?  Some of that light will hit your subject on the camera side, too.

2) Wardrobe:  Wardrobe is always a good place to experiment.  But for this type of image, I’ve always preferred light and airy clothing and free-flowing hair.  A light-colored, sheer fabric works great as a wrap-around.  This type of lighting can also be flattering for nude subjects.

3) Camera Settings:  Naturally, camera settings are going to vary widely based on the type, power, and positioning of the lighting.  If your only real light source is coming in from behind the subject, the settings you use will determine the amount of overexposure you’ll achieve for the background, but it can also determine to what degree your subject will appear as silhouette.  In a smaller room with lighter-colored walls, an overexposure of the background light will allow your subject to be more visible under the lesser illumination of the light scattering back to her from the walls.

With your camera set to Manual (“M”), you have an aperture of f/4, an ISO of 400 and shutter remaining constant at 1/250, you are successfully blowing-out just about all the detail in your background at your current background flash output settings.

Next, you place your subject in the frame to take a test shot which produces a silhouette with very little detail on the subject.  Again, if using only flash, altering the shutter speed won’t be very helpful.

The latter, especially when shot with high ISO settings, can produce some intriguing texture because of the noise that becomes visible.  Finally, I will often clone out distracting pieces of the background if it’s helpful to the final image.

In areas with high concentrations of actors, dancers and other performers, headshots are the bread and butter for many photographers. You can easily create a studio portrait professional-looking as the one presented here with minimal lighting. For this quick example, I placed a Canon 580 EX II on one foot above and behind the camera-left of the subject, zoom to 105mm and aimed directly at the bottom of his head. The flash output was set at 1 / 32.

The main light was another 580 EX II at position 45/45, camera-right, with power setting at 1 / 16, modified with a translucent shoot-through umbrella. The flashes were set to manual and was called with PockeWizard Plus II. Canon 7D, 85mm f/2.8 lens at ISO 100, 1 / 250 sec.

early days portrait photographers used medium format film and slow camera speeds. with the introduction of 35mm film, fast aperture and sync flash, photographers didn’t have to conform to those rigid posing techniques. though there are times when people are immobile, constrained poses may look fake to a modern viewer. a great part of my job in the studio is actually talking to people. I take a few pictures while still talking in a deliberate diversion tactic. if I can make the client laugh, then the real fun begin. when the client is relaxed, they’re gonna reveal their real persona and I’m gonna take the very best pictures.

mood is key in taking portraits. the only way you can create mood is through lighting. lighting helps the photographer project a very subjective perception of a person. many photographers have different approaches to portrait lighting but the objective should be to enhance a mood or modify it.  I shoot a few random pictures and give the client the camera so that they see themselves. while they’re looking at the pictures, I observe the expressions on their faces.  I check the picture number and make a mental note of it. I give some suggestions, take more pictures. the shoot proceeds at a frantic pace. I tell them that I don’t pose clients like a painter. I  let clients move as freely as space constraints allow and also within the range of the lighting setup. one hour goes very fast but nobody’s minding the time that much.

Sigma has announced two new lens for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) and Sony NEX system users. The lens are Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN and Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN featuring a newly developed linear AF motor that moving the lens elements directly without the need for gears or the drive of other mechanical parts.

The lens has three glass mold aspherical lenses to provide excellent correction for distortion, color aberration and field curvature. Comes with AF motor system, the lens gives an accurate and quiet autofocusing on the still images shooting even in video recording.

The objective is equipped with Vibration Reduction (VR) to capture sharper images when shooting telephoto subjects, two ED glass, ultra-fast and quiet auto focus operation. On a Nikon 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR Nikkor 60mm diameter measures 61mm in length with weight approx. 180g/6.3oz.

LowPro the X-50 Pro Roller Attaché is something different in a market of camera bags. It tries to be a hybrid, mixing camera bag with the bag of clothes. Personally, I was searching for a bag that can handle a subset of all my camera gear and clothing for a weekend. The Attaché x-50 feature is its ability to be either a roll or bag to move to a shoulder bag attached.

The bag has a number of splitters and can in fact deal with a Canon 7D with battery grip attached and long-term goal.
As a stand alone clothing bag, the part of pebble configuration with attached off is basic and functional. Tied up with the cover bag roll is required to open all the way by two side straps. The laptop compartment on the attached was much easier than the compartment of the bag roller and the attached has room for pens, paper and other office items.

The stand front actually help stop bag switch to the front flap of the bag when the roller is open. Also, the zipper on the bag main roller is right and seems better than the previous bags I looked at Lowe Pro. It adapts easily to all. Again, I prefer to carry my luggage to roll and roll the bag seems like more work than it’s worth, but it’s a personal preference.
