digital photo tips winter

Winter brings cold and condensation that can damage your camera and related equipment.

basic equipment
Most manufacturers do not guarantee the proper functioning of their equipment below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. With a DSLR, you’ll probably have to remove the lens as you shoot, so use a body cap and rear lens cover to protect from dust, fibers, snow, rain, etc. If hiking and camping, put the camera bag in the sleeping bag with you at night. When you’re ready to travel, you can use envelopes heat to warm equipment chemical in the bag before camera
transfer to a inside pocket. Do not be surprised that the heads and adjustable lubricated parts run slower in colder temperatures, such as lubricating compounds will thicken.

Avoid Condensation
Caches and UV filters should be snug but not too tight. Do not blow the filter lens or lenses, that your breath may freeze and be difficult to remove. Keep a warm, dry wipe handy for wiping the lenses and filters if necessary.

waterproof case

Batteries
Camera and flash batteries lose power more quickly in cold weather, so be prepared and carry spares. Essential to preserve the battery, autofocus keep to a minimum. Reset the camera to keep the short-time LED display. In warm and humid, close to zero or below zero for an extended period, the LCD screen may stop working. Usually, the rest of the unit continues to operate, and feature LCD will return after the camera has warmed.

The best photo Vacation

vacation photos

If you’ve been meaning to pick one up, right before a vacation is the perfect time. When you’ve got a beautiful view in front of you, that fancy $1,200 zoom lens can kill it. If you’ve got the budget, a good 10-22mm would be an excellent place to start. If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, consider a cheap 35mm prime.

If you won’t be able to bring a wide angle lens, try some panoramic sequences that you can piece together in Photoshop later. Even if you’re not a computer wiz, Photoshop does an excellent job of automating this process.

summer vacation

It’s well worth it to miss the shot of Mickey Mouse walking by if you can instead capture the expression on your three year old’s face as it happens.
If you want great face shots like the one above, use a lens that can get fairly close and make sure your aperture is wide open. Unfortunately, many lenses won’t allow you to focus close enough to your subject to take a decent macro. If you want to go all out, you should look at a dedicated macro lens like Canon’s 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro.

Tips for Making Lovely Landscapes

beautiful landscape photography

With the help of these tips, we hope to make a scene filmed a little easier.

Pack the right gear

Wide-angle lens – A wide angle is a must with landscape photography, you often want to capture scenes as much as possible. If you are serious about landscape photography, thinking about upgrading your kit lens for the 14mm f2.8 wide angle prime specifically like it or 20mm.
panoramic landscape photography
Tripod – the time night falls, you will need a tripod for your nice camera and again. If the tripod is too big to carry around, why not try a tripod alternatives gorrillapod like that?

Press cable – A cable release or remote camera (or just use the timer) will always help if you do not shake the camera by pressing the trigger at the beginning of a long exposure shots.
Battery backup – When shooting long exposures on a cold night, you will find that having a fully charged battery backup is very useful.

Filter

Filters are an important part of landscape photography. Remember to put on glasses each lens, you can reduce image quality, so if possible try to buy the best filter you can afford rather than using filters cheap brand. I recommend shooting with Hoya, Cokin or Lee.
fine art landscape photography
So what filter should you take?
Polarizing filters remove reflections from non-metallic surfaces. This gives a blue sky, the polarizer can also improve other colors in the photo.
Do not use too wide a lens with a polarizing filter (28mm max) because the images become uneven polarized.

It is almost impossible to create the effect of polarizing filters in Photoshop or other programs of post-production. I also recommend buying a set of neutral density filters. This block allows light and can help you get longer exposures. It also helps meet the blue sky sunny days.

Sunrise and sunset is the ideal clock for landscape photography. Sun also provides another point of interest in your photo. REMEMBER, do not look at the sun, even through your camera!
I advice to RAW because it allows you to play with the white balance afterwards.

With a shot different exposures, you just make sure that our pictures are perfect.
Take a look at Airlight: Edge of Darkness shooting, shooting a video tutorial with limited light.

Photographing Flowers and Gardens

photography 101

First, apologies to anyone noticed that I was negligent in my duties as blogs. I just checked and it was almost two months since the last post. I honestly do not know it was anywhere near as long. I have not taken many photos recently, at least not very hard to share that is. On the front of writing things seemed to dry up a bit. I started a couple of posts, but they were stale and bored, so I decided not to impose on someone else.

I was very busy with a business rather new, or at least a new twist on an old, and I’ll write about it here the other day and week ahead. This and other work is not an excuse for my absence if – sometimes the good really does run dry and when that happens I think its best to do something else for a while and come back refreshed and more importantly with something new to say.
Photographing Flowers and Gardens

Here are some photographs I took of the garden over the last three days. We are living a kind of drought, and are at this time of year when things start to look a little ragged around the edges, not the usual conditions for photography garden that I know, but it Therein lies the challenge.
Photographing Flowers and Gardens
We are now in this part of the year when plants begin to wilt and the flowers die back and lose their familiar shapes, colors and textures. Culturally, we are infused with the idea that this state of affairs is not an aesthetic best to not to practice with the camera. Well, my opinion is a little different this time of year is when is when things become unpredictable and all sorts of wonderful shapes and spaces begin to appear. Is that to see with new eyes something new.
the photographs of the garden
Daylilies produce some wonderful opportunities and unpredictable. The trick was to be close and literally forget that they were always flowers, just to see them as really interesting organic forms and in terms of positive and negative space. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth pictures are all daylilies. The top photo is a trumpet vine and the second looks like an anemone. I could be wrong but I prefer the unit to a field guide spotters. Anyway, two of them appeared on the part of the lawn is on an angle of about 45 degrees about six feet away. Over a few days the flower faded from bright red to delicate pink with subtle white spots. Other photographs are from various parts of a hosta, a very dried allium
outdoor photography
On a more technical note, all photographs were taken with a Nikon D40x digital SLR using either one of two zoom kit lens and a 10x (which does not make things 10x) was used for some of them. The images were edited using the free software called Shotwell on a computer with Ubuntu on it. The software is pretty basic, but hey – it is not the removal tool place though, as you can tell! I’m going to work a little more about these programs at some point to get rid of some stains. The bright colors are not so much due to over enthusiastic editing to have my camera located over high heat. They were shot at dusk and that adds to the effect.

Here’s the rest of the photos of the garden of the last two days. There are about a hundred in all.

Your Guide to photograph small pets

Take pictures of small pets entering an exciting new world of photography that almost touches on the theme of the macro. These little animals need treatment to get close-ups a real impact when you’re stuck in a frame on the mantelpiece.

These little animals need treatment to get close-ups a real impact when you’re stuck in a frame on the mantelpiece.

The golden rules are the same as any other style of photography for pets; own natural environments, focusing on the eyes, and especially dynamic pose, capture their personality.

You can pick the style ‘big cheese’ s’, such as capturing a pig Guinea sneaking a jar, but small animals work better (and happier) in their own environment.

A macro lens is the weapon of choice for nailing great small pet pictures, but any long lens above 00mm will enable you to get in close enough for frame-filling impact. You’ll need to maximise depth of field using small apertures around f/8 and above, so if they live in a cage indoors get it near a window for maximum light levels.

Tips: Slow shutter speeds

waterfall,slow speed

waterfall,slow speed

Creating the illusion of movement within a still image can be a difficult proposition, as it requires breaking one of the basic rules of photography in keeping the subject sharp.

A waterfall makes for an attractive subject when taking landscape photography, but some of the majesty of the image is lost when the shutter speed is too high. The water appears completely static and although the environment will give away the motion, the final effect will still be a poor reflection of the subject. The only method to remedy this is to slow the shutter speed in order to carry a degree of motion blur, portraying a far more active image. By sacrificing the sharpness in the main subject, the movement will be better carried into the image, and the surrounding environment being sharp emphasises the fact that the water isn’t blurred through poor photography, but simply for an intentional effect.

The fact that a waterfall is often surrounded by trees makes the exposure difficult, as streaks of light often appear, rather than a balanced amount. Trees also have the added annoyance of moving around in a breeze, meaning the water may not be the only blurred object. On a particularly windy day, it can be better to simply crop the trees out of the photo with some tighter framing. As with any type of landscape photography, patience is the key, so don’t be discouraged if the first few shots aren’t exactly as intended. Be sure to grab a tripod and don’t get too close to the action, or the camera may not survive the image-taking process.

Please refer to the image above for the following number references.1 Background sharpness
Switch to manual focus and make sure the surrounding area is sharp, rather than worrying about the waterfall itself2 Slow shutter speed
Put the shutter speed down to around the half-second mark, and keep an eye on the aperture. It may close too far to compensate on Program mode3 Inconsistent lighting issues
Surrounding obstructions might cause streaks of light across the image, so waiting for a perfect moment may be a fruitless exercise4 Steady as she goes
A tripod will be absolutely vital for this shot, as the long shutter speeds make it impossible to go hand-held without it resulting in a blurred mess

Basics of Composition by ableh photography

Posted by admin On April - 7 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Composition Basics

Composition is defined as the arrangement and combination of elements within a confined frame such as a canvass, a photograph to create a complete image. Composition can include factors such as design, order, structure, texture, form, and other elements brought together in one frame.

In photography, composition is probably the biggest influential factor in creating eye-catching works of art. The ability of a photographer to include or exclude certain elements in a scene, arrange the subject’s position, change vantage points, and other compositional techniques separate a random snapshot from an actively composed photograph.

While human eyes can interpret three-dimensions with relative ease, the ability of our eyes to decode distance, depth, texture, and patterns are not easily tranlated on a two-dimensional photographic image.

It is the task of the photographer to simulate and recreate three-dimensions into a two-dimension medium, and understanding the basic forms of composition is paramount in order to achieve this goal.

Alignment can be interpreted as how the internal items of the frame line up to the physical edges of the photograph itself. A camera often has a horizonally placed rectangular frame with the length being longer than the height. Most beginners instinctively hold the camera as the camera’s form dictates, however, many vantage point are better suited if the camera was tilted at certain angles or when the camera is held vertically.

Alignment can mean from ensuring that horizon of the subject lined up to the edges of the image frame, or making sure that subjects are lined up against each other within the frame.

ableh photography

landscape

Some images tend to favor a vertically oriented alignment to illustrate height and size. Vertical composition can also benefit from having a blank sky as a backdrop to isolate the subject away from distracting elements.

nature photography

Coverage

Coverage denotes the amount of space the subject fills the entire image area. Some images are best suited when the subject fills as much of the frame as possible while others are better suited if placed in a small are within the image.

Generally speaking, it is best to fill the frame with the subject if the details of the subject must be displayed and is a critical part of the image’s purpose.
There are cases, however, that isolating a subject allows the photographer to show scale and relative differences of two or more elements in a frame that would not be possible if the subject filled the frame by itself.

ableh photography

scalle

Arrangement

The arrangement of elements within a frame may be pre-arranged by the photographer or pre-arranged by circumstance. The more control the photographer has in arranging the subject or subjects according to the intended output, the greater the accuracy, intent, and detail is expected in the output, in general.
On the other hand, in many outdoor or impromptu photographs, the subjects or elements may be fixed and immovable, in such cases, the photographer will have to be the one to physically move the camera’s position to compose the photograph to fit the intended subject in the frame.
Whether or not the photographer can physically manipulate the elements in the scene or not, the general intent is still to direct focus and attention to the intended subject or message of the photograph.

ableh photography

Stacking

Stacking elements also suggests depth and distance of various elements within a scene. By comparing the relative size and distance of one object from another, we can create a sense of scale and depth between the two or more elements in a two-dimensional frame.

ableh photography

Colors and Shades

The arrangement of colors and shades in a frame can also work as a compositional element when used properly. Certain colors accentuate one another while other colors subdue each other, knowing when to use colors to direct attention to a subject can be just as effective as placing a subject in certain parts of the frame.Color can also act as a separator between light and dark areas, forcing the viewer to look at very specific areas in the frame.

Texture

Texture offers a visually tangible and organic feel to photographs. Despite seeing a photograph either on screen or print, images that depict strong textures and sharp features often “pops out” and projects a three-dimensional image.

ableh photography

texture

Using textures on certain subject matter such as rustic elements, weathered expressions and facial features, or abstract scenes can transform a bland image to an engaging and self-expressing photograph.
